At Lodge Farm we want all children to gain a firm understanding of what music is through listening, singing, playing, evaluating, analysing, and composing across a wide variety of historical periods, styles, traditions, and musical genres.

We seek to develop enjoyment and a curiosity for the subject, as well as an understanding and acceptance of the importance of all types of music, and an unbiased respect for the role that music may wish to be expressed in any person’s life.

We are committed to ensuring children understand the value and importance of music in the wider community, and are able to use their musical skills, knowledge, and experiences to involve themselves in music, in a variety of different contexts. Where possible, we use the extensive resources at the neighbouring music centre to enhance our curriculum.

In science we aim to build a deep understanding of the body of knowledge and skills built up through experimental testing of ideas. Science is also a methodology, a practical way of finding reliable answers to questions we may ask about the world around us. Science in our school is about developing children’s ideas and ways of working that enable them to make sense of the world in which they live through investigation, as well as using and applying process skills.

We encourage children to be curious and ask scientific questions beginning to appreciate the way science will affect their future on a personal, national and global level. We enable children to plan and carry out scientific investigations, using equipment, including new technologies. We develop scientific knowledge and conceptual understanding. We help children to evaluate evidence and present their conclusions clearly and accurately.

Science Progression

Phonics

We use the DfE validated scheme, Monster Phonics to teach phonics. This is a systematic and synthetic approach to teaching phonics which is highly engaging. It supports the rapid acquisition of phonics which underpins being able to read.

Reading

We believe that reading opens the door to education. Our curriculum ensures that all children have a high level of fluency and understanding so that they are able to access all areas of the curriculum and learning as they progress through their education and into adulthood. Our curriculum will inspire children to have a love of literature and to become independent life-long learners.

Writing

Writing is a crucial tool for communication. Our curriculum ensures that all children have a high level of literacy so that they are able to access all areas of the curriculum and learning as they progress through their education and into adulthood. Our curriculum inspires children to have a love of literature and writing to support them to become independent life-long learners.

Spelling

Spelling is integral to the writing process. Our curriculum will provide confidence in spelling which frees up the working-memory to focus on the content of the writing. Our curriculum prioritises making links to previously taught rules to ensure pupils retain taught rules and conventions. Our curriculum supports pupils to become confident writers.

FINAL GOAL FOR THE END OF KS2: To be able to apply spelling rules and conventions confidently allowing pupils to focus on the content of their writing.

Speech and Language

Speech and language is a fundamental building block in children’s development. Our curriculum ensures that children have a high level of speech, language and communication so that they are able to communicate effectively with others and access all areas of the curriculum as they progress through their education and into adulthood.

Our aim is to develop the confidence and competence of each child in the foreign language they are learning. Our goal is for them to be passionate, curious and confident about their own foreign language learning abilities when they finish the primary school phase of their education.

We believe that Art it is a vital part of the education of all children. We aim for children to feel that their creations are celebrated and appreciated. We believe that this will help each child to feel the freedom to express their individualities through their art and to have them celebrated and see that they are valued though display in school.

The child’s use and understanding of the visual language of art is developed by effective teaching and by a considered sequence of experiences. We aim to provide an art curriculum which will enable each child to reach their full potential in learning in art, through investigating and making, through research and the development of skills and through their evaluation of their own art and that made by others.

We aim for our art curriculum to support and nurture positive self-image and esteem as well as a  respect for the individualities of others and of themselves.

Art Progression 

In design technology, we aim to develop design and technology capability to prepare all children for citizenship in an ever-increasing technological world. Design and technology is part of every child's immediate experience. It is important that children are not only aware of what design and technology is, but also develop a practical approach to it.

We therefore aim to develop skills and knowledge of a wide range of materials and equipment through practical activities in a safe and controlled environment.

DT Progression

Our RE lessons are intended to offer a broad and rich RE curriculum to allow for coverage of the areas prescribed; to allow for a variety of ways to explore religions, their community and personal development and wellbeing. Our lessons have an intention of providing a high quality, coherent and progressive experience of the subject, with scope for cross-curricular learning.

Through each unit, children will know about and understand a range of religions and world views. They will be able to identify, investigate and respond to a variety of issues. SMSC, personal growth and community cohesion are featured throughout each non-statutory strand and are there to ensure opportunities for children to develop positive attitudes and values and to reflect on and relate their learning in RE to their own experiences. The intent is to make sure that children understand the relevance of RE in today’s modern world and how it affects our lives.

Religious education will be taught through celebrations and festivals throughout the year. Drawing upon the experiences and beliefs of children in the setting, in order to make the learning relevant and purposeful. Adults will set up provocation areas which will give children the opportunity to explore and reflect upon religious artefacts.

We believe that skills in computing are fundamental to children’s learning and should be incorporated into all areas of the curriculum wherever possible. It is recognised that we have a responsibility to encourage digital literacy in all pupils to support the present and in preparation for their future. New technologies require children to be able to interact fully with computers, laptops, tablets and a growing number of other devices, programs and software in order to fully support their learning in a number of contexts.

It is recognised that the level of expectation of children’s abilities to use new technologies is rising, particularly within the new National Curriculum for Computing with its strong emphasis on computer science and computer programming skills, which we teach through the Purple Mash scheme.

In relationships, sex & health education, we aim to provide all children with an education that prepares them for the opportunities, responsibilities and experiences of adult life. We want to encourage our pupils to develop self-respect, confidence and empathy, which will enable them to make positive choices and decisions.

We believe it is important to prepare pupils for puberty, and give them an understanding of sexual development and the importance of health and hygiene, and help them move confidently and responsibly into adolescence and adulthood. We aim to create a positive culture around relationships and help children to make responsible choices about their health and wellbeing.

In personal, social, health and emotional education, we strive to prepare our pupils for the challenges they face emotionally, socially and physically in their everyday lives and in the future. We aim to provide structured opportunities throughout their school journey for our pupils to develop a good understanding of the world around them and to learn how to cooperate and respect others.

We value the diverse society in which we live and promote an appreciation and understanding of this in our pupils. Our curriculum fosters independence of thought and respect for the views of others, which may be different to their own. When children leave Lodge Farm they are well-prepared for the next stage of their education, with the skills they need to operate as responsible, caring citizen who values the world they live in.

For all children to develop their geographical skills and use enquiry-based research to extend their knowledge and understanding of the local area, the United Kingdom, Europe and the wider world.

The final goal for the end of KS2 is for children to respect similarities and differences between themselves and others, deepen their understanding of the links between physical and human processes and to appreciate the part we all have to play in looking after our world.
